TV Licence & RTE  Reply with quote

Via the licence fee, RTE costs 44c a day.

44c a day for RTE to buy in american programming or UK soaps.

44c a day for RTE to air boxing or ireland's got talent.

44c a day for Gerry Ryan and Pat Kenny.

I don't want to spend 44c for these things when my TV and radio can pick up equal or in some cases better programming for not extra cost.

RTE as a system is old-school, inefficient and not-democratic.

I think we need a decent news service, for politics & current affairs.

I think we need a decent scrutiny service, documentary and panelist programming.

And that's pretty much it, all this embarrasing entertainment and comedy RTE does that we pay for - no thanks, not on my watch.

And yet RTE manage to make a profit everynow and then, while truly commercial stations suffer.

I propose

- we shut down RTE,

- Make use of the acres in Donnybrook for the people of Ireland (who fancies a park? transport hub? civic center? opera house? outdoor music/theatre venue? fitness area? any ideas yerself?)

- Start scaling back and then abolish the licence fee

- Setup an objective news (see other thread) and information service (paid for from tax income)

- Those who used to work in RTE entertainment and sport can go work for commercial stations if there's an apetite for the material?

Theres no doubt RTE is shite and im finding it harder and harder each year to part with my hard-earned 160 euro. Im seriously thinking of packing it in when the current licence is up. When i do watch tv its usually non-Irish channels anyway. Not that theres an overabundance of good stuff elsewhere. TV generally is increasingly dumbed down and banal, with RTE just as bad if not worse than its international rivals.
From the point of view of its cultural remit, RTE is little more than a conduit for bargain basement dross, and rehashed formats from elsewhere. I know the argument is that its what the people want, but i for one am sick of the endless parade of celebrity chefs, makeovers and x-factor rubbish, and worst of all, the chat-shows which consist of RTE notaries having a titterfest with other RTE notaries, padded out with z-list celebs from the pages of vip magazine.
Then look at the salaries theyre dishing out to their presenters: Pat Kenny gets 850,000. Gerry Ryan 558,000. Marian Finucane 455,000.
Joe Duffy and Ryan Tubridy over 350,000. (2006 figures by the way)
Its outrageous. How can these people be worth such money, public money at that. To pay Pat Kenny's wages requires the licence fees of over 5,300 people. He defended his earnings by claiming that it paled by comparison to what some sports stars are getting. Too right Pat, and in view of what some of our revered bankers are getting I reckon I'm due a 2,000% increase in my own spawns.
The green areas at Montrose should be used to put these guys out to pasture.

I don't believe it should be shut down as a country needs a national broadcaster.

However I do believe the following:

1) They should not be allowed earn money from advertising and the license fee, its one or the other.

2) The quality of the programming content that comes out of RTE is appalling. There needs to be a major shake-up from top to bottom of the entire organisation and put some people who know what they are doing in charge.

In many ways it's such a political organisation, i'd be impressed if it could be turned around.

They need massive wage cuts, thered be plenty willing to do pat kennys job for 100k or less. And don't claim he has some major talent for it, cos he just talks shite and ocassionally makes a stupid mistake, he's like anyone's auld lad really. I'd be more entertained if the late late was hosted by some lad they picked up at random in some pub and gave them a few days to get ready. Different fella each week. bang just saved nearly 3 quarters of a million euro right there(we'll have to feed them and such)
